The most distinguishing aspect of Ostuni, however, is not so much ancient structures, but its white buildings instead, which are also the reason for the city’s nickname, The White City. Lime wash was initially employed to brighten the dark and labyrinthine medieval alleyways, but it became a matter of life or death in the late 1700s when it was utilized to sanitize the streets and limit the plague’s ravages.
