Beginning from the Plaza de las Carmelitas, just in front of the town center of Vélez-Málaga, we will embark on a 3-hour journey to learn about some of the city’s most ancient landmarks. On the way, we will enjoy the medieval beauty of the Plaza del Carmen, with the exterior of the old church of the monastery of San José de la Soledad del Monte Carmelo, presently transformed into the Teatro del Carmen, or the statue of one of the most renowned flamenco singer.
Our next stop will be the Plaza de la Constitución, which houses the parish of San Juan Bautista, the Poster Building, the Fountain of Ferdinand VI and its unique “distinctions,” and the early medieval partitions. From here we have to climb up to the viewpoint of the wall surfaces.
After this, we will continue our walk through the Villa area’s narrow and winding pavements of Moorish origin, an ancient Muslim medina traveling through the Church of Santa Mara de la Encarnación, which was an ancient Aljama mosque and has a wealthy and powerful architectural heritage inside.
This architecture has a double utilization, parish and the first site devoted to Holy Week throughout Andalusia, and is one of the most iconographic buildings of the city’s affluent monumental intricate.
To conclude the tour, we will explore the ruins of the adjacent and enforcing Muslim citadel that once controlled all of this region, from which we can climb the tribute tower to enjoy extraordinary panoramic views of more than 150 meters high, overlooking the sea, the fertile valley of the Vélez River with its subtropical farmlands, the mountainous foothills of the natural park of the mountains of Alhama, Tejeda, and Almijara.
