In the end of the 19 th and beginning of the 20 th century, Le Marais had transformed to a center of the Jewish community. The Eastern Europe Jews immigrated to the place established a diverse neighborhood which was vibrant. Remnants of the Jewish quarter could however still be viewed in the Rue des Rosiers, which were famous for Jewish delis and shops.

World War II and Revitalization

Le Marais was damaged due to bombings and occupancy by German troops during the World War II. Nevertheless, the district went under a dramatic reinvention in the second half of the 20th century. The beautiful narrow streets and the historic building attracted the artists, writers and the intellect, which swarmed the place.

The LGBTQ+ Community

Le Marais had integrated itself as the center of the LGBTQ+ community in Paris during the 1970s. It developed into a bustling and all-inclusive district, with a few spots being LGBTQ+ bars, clubs, and shops. To date, Le Marais continues being an integral part of LGBTQ+ culture and acceptance in Paris.

Cultural and Creative Hub

With a high abundance of art galleries, museums and trendy boutiques, Le Marais has become a cultural, as well as a creative center. District is home to the famous Centre Pompidou that contains a large collection of modern art.
