Product Description
ARE ORTIGIA AND SYRACUSE THE SAME PLACE? But first and foremost, it’s critical to clear up any uncertainty that any of you may be experiencing right now (or prevent it from arising later down the line). It’s common to hear ‘Ortigia’ and ‘Syracuse’ referred to as two separate entities, and we assumed they were until we began conducting real study for our own visit. The fact that the island and the city are practically next to each other came as a relief and a little disappointment; you might not even realize you’ve strolled across one of the two short bridges connecting the two.
Ortigia – also spelled Ortygia – was the foundation core of the Ancient Greek city of Syracuse (more on that later), therefore the two have always been linked. Today, the island serves as the city of Syracuse’s ‘old town’ or ‘historical center,’ as well as its most famous tourist destination.
So don’t be fooled: a trip to Syracuse, Sicily, will also include a trip to Ortigia Island.
Yes, New York’s Syracuse is named after the Sicilian city!
