  • 2024-03-072025-06-05

The capital of the United Kingdom, London, is famous for its complex history, vast cultural differences and it’s imposing monuments. However if I ever had to pick one landmark which represents London it would be Big Ben.

Introduction to Big Ben

Big Ben, situated in the centre of London, is maybe London’s most iconic landmark. Contrary to what many people think the name ‘Big Ben’ is actually the name of the bell inside the clock tower officially known as the Elizabeth Tower. This great building lies at the northern end of the Palace of Westminster, which is the home of the Houses of Parliament.

The History of Big Ben

Construction of the clock tower began in 1834, and was completed in 1859. Big Ben 96 Metres High was designed by Architect Charles Barry’s Captivating blend of Gothic and Classical Style Architecture. The clock mechanism, on the other hand, was built by clockmaker Edward John Dent and the four clock faces are fashioned from opal glass and at night those are lit.

The Famous Bell and Chimes

The bell inside the tower, nicknamed Big Ben, is a massive 13.5 tons in weight, and is rung every hour chimes, making a sonorous, long distance audible sound across the city. These chimes have become a symbol of London and are recognisable globally, all over the world.

Visiting Big Ben

Even though Big Ben is one of most famous feature of London. It iss quite necessary to note that visitors may have difficulty in accessing the Elizabeth Tower. You can’t go up into the tower as it’s mainly the UK Parliament they are using. However you can still get to enjoy the grandeur of Big Ben and take pictures from outside.

Best Viewing Spots

There are several great viewpoints you can view some of the grandeur of Big Ben. Some of the most popular spots are Westminster Bridge, the South Bank of the River Thames and Victoria Tower Gardens. Whether you’re taking a casual walk by the river or having a quiet picnic, it doesn’t matter – this famous landmark will have you in picture frame from all angles.

Interesting Facts about Big Ben

  • Big Ben is the largest of four-faced chiming clocks of the world,
  • The clock tower leans slightly to the northwest.
  • Even the clock tower remained intact during World War II, was not bomb damaged while surrounding buildings suffered.
  • Big Ben was renamed Elizabeth Tower, in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, in 2012.

Conclusion

Big Ben is the one of the most recognized landmarks in London, and indeed is bit of the London history and the eternal style. Even though it is not permitted to view the inside of the Elizabeth Tower, seeing the grandeur and grandeur of this famous symbol at such a close perspective is an experience that you will never have anywhere else.
