Where Not to Stay in Berlin
It’s therefore worth thinking about if you’re going to be staying in Berlin as one of the most important decisions when planning a trip there is where to stay. Berlin is a popular travel destination, and there are various accommodation options, so that you can choose it depending on your needs and budget. It is necessary to find out a neighbourhood that is suitable to your needs so that you are comfortable to stay there. Well, in this blog post we will explore some neighborhoods in Berlin which you’d better stay away from to find accommodation.
1. Wedding
Wedding is a neighborhood in the northwest of Berlin, but also one of its ‘compartments’, that is, synonymous with an intense and fascinating mixture of different cultures, religions, ages, races, and of course languages. Though it’s a nice area for getting a cultural (or emotional) experience, it’s not the best area for tourists or first timers to this city.
According to crime rates, the neighborhood is less safe than other parts of Berlin. While some effort has been put in to make it safer, tourists are still strongly encouraged to stay in areas that are more central combined.
2. Marzahn-Hellersdorf
The Marzahn-Hellersdorf is one of the districts of Berlin in the eastern outskirts. Mostly occupied by residential high rise apartment housing. It could serve as a good option to the locals, but due to its distance from the city center it is not the best choice for tourists.
However, Marzahn-Hellersdorf is one of the parts of the city that is not as artistic, not as centrally located and not as easy to access to offer people the popular attractions that you would find in other areas of the city. While visiting Berlin, to enjoy sightseeing and explore the city side, a neighborhood near the city center is preferred as you can walk everywhere.
3. Lichtenberg
Another part of Berlin less well favored to visitors is Lichtenberg. Lichtenberg used to be an industrial district, consisting of residential and commercial areas. Even if the Stasi Museum is one of the district’s few attractions, the district itself offers little charm or facilities in relation to the more central neighbourhoods.
Lichtenberg lies somewhat removed from the main tourist traps, which could mean lack of public transport options. In order to have a pleasant experience in Berlin on a short visit, it is advisable to choose a centrally located area.
4. Spandau
Also less popular is Spandau, which is situated in the western sector of Berlin. Primarily residential with an historic old town, it isn’t as exciting a place as some, but is one nonetheless.
Spandau itself has its own attractions, amongst them the beautiful Spandau Citadel, but compared to the city center as well as the main tourist attractions it is a long way away. It is better if you take a place nearer to the city center if you want to prefer easy access to Berlin’s major sights, museums, nightlife.
Conclusion
Your stay in a good located neighborhood in Berlin has a huge bearing on how your experience of the city turns out to be. Sometimes listening to less well known areas can be interesting but the safety, proximity to other attractions and getting around is an important consideration.
The worst areas to visit in Berlin as a first time visitor are Wedding, Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Lichtenberg, and Spandau. Instead, go for Mitte, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer Berg, for instance, since there you will get a lively atmosphere, many amenities, as well as easy access to the major city sights.
