Pisa is much more than the Leaning Tower, the River Arno’s sweeping bend, and Galileo Galilei Airport. On behalf of Toscana Promozione Turistica, Tuscany’s regional tourism bureau, the Florentine spent a day in Pisa investigating all things artistic. Because of the mural he painted on the back wall of the Sant’Antonio Abate church in 1989, Keith Haring has a permanent presence in Pisa. When Pisa-born student Piergiorgio Castellani encountered Haring on the streets of Manhattan’s East Village, the idea for a painting in Pisa came to him by happenstance. The kid encouraged the artist to make a significant work of art in Pisa because he is known for being approachable and producing public murals in international locales. The artwork, which resembles a puzzle, features 30 figurines drawn in a cartoonish style with themes of peace and harmony. Haring drew inspiration from his surroundings to create a work that was in tune with its social setting, instead than using his typical primary colors.
