Vejer has accumulated hundreds of years of history since the Phoenicians managed to pass through Cádiz. Presently, we can see Roman Access Walls and Doors to the Historic Center, as well as aspects of the Aljama Mosque on the original temple with its Sahan (patio), which has been incorporated into the existing Church of El Salvador. The footprint of the Umayyads in the Castle, such as Abderramán II, or the Alfices (arches) of the Almohads. The presence of Islam, which has been present for nearly 5 centuries, and its peaceful coexistence with the Jews are distinctive to Vejer.
We’ll visit the Walled Enclosure, passing through the Puerta de la Segur and make our way to the Main Church and the Castle. Then we’ll walk down through the Jewish quarter to the Mirador de las Cobijadas, where we’ll gaze out over the Atlantic Ocean and Africa. Then it’s on to the Arab Quarter’s winding streets. Its heroines, including Layla Al-Zhura, founder of Chef-Chaouen and wife of the last Mr. Sidi Ali Ben Al-Rashi, and Juan Relinque, antagonizer of Hazas de Luck and respected as Spain’s First Ombudsman, will make you feel exceptional.
