Berlin Brandenburg Airport, also abbreviated BER, is the chief international airport for Berlin, Germany. The new airport opening was a historic milestone for Berlin’s air travel and a much longed for event for the local citizen as much as for the tourists.

Construction of the Berlin Brandenburg Airport

These plans for a new airport for Berlin were born in the early 1990s following German reunification. The original plan was to replace the existing and overcrowded Tegel Airport. However, owing to numerous issues, including financial troubles and planning blunders, the undertaking encountered numerous bottlenecks.

Work on the Berlin Brandenburg Airport officially began in 2006, with a first scheduled completion date for 2011. The airport would be going to have new facilities, better capacity and improved infrastructure to meet the increasing requirements of the air travel.

The Delays and Challenges

Build of Berlin Brandenburg Airport was plagued by delays and snags, sparking a lot of media attention and public anger at the delays. Technical issues and complications with the airport’s fire safety system hindered these crashes, along with mistakes made in planning.

A major blow was the finding in 2012 late in the planning stage that of critical structural problems of Airport’s main terminal. The defective fire safety system, which did not comply with the relevant safety standards, led authorities to indefinitely postpone the inauguration of the project.

The delays persisted over the years as more and more problems were revealed. They ranged from problems with the baggage handling system to the security infrastructure and communications network. The countless delays resulted in added expenses, forever impairing the airport’s image and bothering passengers, airlines, and airport workforce.

Opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport

In the end, after years of painstaking inspections, tests, and renovations, Berlin Brandenburg Airport was officially officially opened on 31 October 2020. The first flight from the new airport was an EasyJet flight to London Gatwick.

The airport is equipped with the latest advanced facilities, pleasant amenities and better accessibility for the passengers. It has a tremendous variety of shops, eateries and lounge that can improve the travel experience. In addition, its modern construction and architectural elements have led to admiration from fanatics of airplanes and enthusiasts for architecture.
