Barcelona’s Olympic Village & the 92 Olympics (barcelonaolímpica)

Barcelona’s Olympic Village & the 92 Olympics (barcelonaolímpica)

  • 2024-03-072025-06-04

All cities would love to host an Olympics but very few will ever be selected to do so. It requires an eternity of effort and the most significant vested time, energy and capital. Spain received the Olympic challenge to hold the 1992 Summer Games – and done a good job.

This world class Spanish city managed the unthinkable that many Olympic host cities can only dream of. The planners had not spent billions of dollars for super expensive venues that would end up being too expensive to use and eventually covered in graffitti and have the doors padlocked.

Rather, city planners went for a savvy approach. They exploited the Olympics as a way to renew their rundown industrial wharf, a goal the city had been wanting for decades. They did not spend too much money on a two-week party, but utilised the Olympic opportunity to draw in massive tourism that will also uplift the lives of those residing within.

Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys – The Olympic Stadium

Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys might have been the factor behind why during Olympics the planners were so anxious to make the Olympics into long-term gain for the city. The stadium was erected initially in 1927 to host the 1929 International Exposition. It became an important part of the city’s unsuccessful bid to host the 1936 Summer Olympics. Unfortunately, the city lost to boarder town Berlin, the sole host city of the 1936 Summer Olympics.

The stadium missed the opportunity to brighten up again. The city council had planned the People’s Olympiad as a kind of counter-Olympics to the award of the 1936 Games to Berlin. The Nazi’s power was increasing and World War 2 was only waiting round the corner. Sadly, however, the event’s planners were not able to go ahead and stage the People’s Olympiad because of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.

Over the years, the stadium was abandoned and gradually neglected. By 1975 the stadium had become so deteriorated and hazardous that the F1 drivers of came close to boycotting a race at the track when lord ordered them to camping as team paddock there.

When the athletes from 169 countries did what amounts to their most TV-friendly sports-activity – proudly strutting on the field for the 1992 opening ceremonies, they were effectively walking on a brand new stadium. The original exterior remained, but the interior including the stands had been ripped out and totally redone.

It had taken 56 years, but Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys can now say that it is the “Olympics Stadium.” The stadium arranged once more in the year 2010, proceeds of proudly covering vast events for the residents also for the tourists from each across the globe.

La Vila Olímpica del Poblenou – The Olympic Village of Poblenou

An Olympics Village is a mini city, providing the homes and meals of the sports competitors and workers before and during the Olympics. For so many of the athletes the Olympic experience will be a lifetime event never to be forgotten. Opponents find out about each other while training for races. Following the Closing Ceremony, an Olympics Village can lead to a ghost Town. This useful city did not permit this to occur.

The architects took place of the Olympic Village in the old industrial, working-class district. Unsheltered and aging warehouses and factories were converted to a hip district in which people still live, work, and play. A train track that had previously divided the district from the sea was taken away.

Any trip to the area should also include the Olympic Village and nearby area.
